Special hedgehog houses can be bought for hibernating. This is not necessary: if there are quiet nooks in the garden, with some branches and leaves, it will make its own nest. So don’t tidy up too much. A hedgehog is a master at getting rid of slugs and snails, for that reason slug pellets should obviously not be used in the garden. Because a hedgehog’s territory is larger than a single garden, it is important that they can get in and out. Especially fences form an obstacle. Leave a space of about 10 centimetres under the fence, so hedgehogs and other small mammals can crawl through.
